What are the SPS coordinator’s tasks?
Coordination during design including risks assessment and selection of prevention means to avoid accidents.
The coordinator:
- Opens the register
- Gives his written opinion to the site manager and construction manager about APS, APD and DCE
- Raises the PGC
- Can prepare the work declaration for the construction manager
- Raises the DIUO
Coordination during the whole construction period.
The coordinator:
- Apply risk prevention principles
- Perform standard inspection visits
- Review and amend PPSPS
- updates the PGC
- Perform site visits and maintain the register
- Finalize the DIUO according to the DOE
What does the French law say?
Regardless of the amount of work involved, a coordinator must be appointed as soon as the project concerns more than one company (Work code article L.235-3)
Which construction sites require an SPS coordinator?
Construction sites counting more than on company including sub contractors. The coordinator must be assigned for the design stage, upon beginning of the pre design stage and before launching the tender documents.
Which categories?
- Category 3: Construction sites without special risks comprising at least two companies.
- Category 3 with special risks: A simplified PGC will be raised by the coordinator and will request the concerned company to generate a PPSPS (example lodging renovation).
- Category 2: Construction sites comprising at least two companies including sub contractors and for work lasting more than 30 days and employing more than 20 men in the same time or counting more than 500 man days (4 men/ 125 days) and at least 10.000/jours.
- Category 1: Construction sites comprising at least 10 building companies including sub contractors, and counting more than 10.000 man days (40 men/ 250 days). In an easier way, this concerns construction site with work costs between 300.000€ and 4.5 M€.
